Why “No Kings?”

When first she heard of the No Kings protests, Mrs. Grundy appreciated the catchy slogan. Yet, she was aghast Moderns did not know this issue was settled in the 18th Century Revolutionary War.

She feared a misbegotten American uprising against King Charles III who, for pity sakes, has been on the throne for all of ten minutes.

Thankfully, The Miss Grundys clarified the current situation. Mrs. Grundy now understands these are protests against the current Presidential Mullet, not the former King George III.

Yet, she thinks how cheeky Americans are, even today, criticizing a monarchy they summarily rejected 250 years ago.

When The Miss Grundys expressed support for “No Kings,” Farmer Grundy donned his bearskin and sang a frightfully off-key rendition of God Save the King

For her part, Mrs. Grundy has grown fond of this quaint American experiment and does not wish a return to her English days of courtly attire (although she loves a tasteful fascinator)

She also thinks wholesale denunciation of all kings is excessive, and told The Miss Grundys that very thing. She reminded them of their family debut in England, in the very wings of the London stage, during the reign of the reviled King George III.

And, she asked, what about the Friends of Public Television? If there are No Kings, there is no British peerage system. Would not the entire Masterpiece Theater enterprise collapse? Are not some of their favorite series based on the reigns of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth?

That caution struck home, as The Miss Grundys never miss any show featuring tiaras.

Mrs. Grundy Thinks the protestors ought to clarify their true fear is the relentless rise of an American tyrant, rather than denounce all those born to wear the royal nappy.  But they will have to find a new slogan. Indeed.
